What Superhero Fatigue? Doctor Strange Blowing Away International Box Office

Recommended Videos

If superhero movies are anywhere near losing ground, Marvel’s latest entry isn’t showing any signs, and it’s not even out in the U.S. yet. Overseas, Doctor Strange is knocking down box office predictions for its opening weekend, as well as numbers set by previous Marvel movies like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. That bodes well for its overall take and those of us who will get tired of superhero movies when we’re tired of superhero comics: never.

Deadline reports that Strange raked in $86 million after opening in 32 film markets over the weekend, which is well ahead of even the loftiest predictions of $70 million. How much of that has to do with Cumberbatch in the lead is up for debate, but Marvel is probably feeling pretty confident with their decision to delay the movie for him right about now. The movie’s biggest take so far has been in Korea, where it’s already beaten lifetime totals of most recent superhero flicks.

Meanwhile, the movie hasn’t even opened in China yet, where it could possibly draw in more huge numbers—not to mention its U.S. debut this weekend. For us, there will probably be a lot more to talk about with this movie than sheer numbers, but it’s still great to see it doing well financially. We may have had what feels like a billion Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man movies, but the comic book world has plenty of other stories waiting to be told on the big screen. With the success of lesser-known heroes like Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Suicide Squad, we’re hopefully in for even more departures from the “mainstream” heroes that usually dominate the movies.
