Emily Blunt Handed Out Puppies on Saturday Night Live Because It’s What We All Need Right Now

It’s time to get real: these past few months have been draining, stressful, troubling–basically any negative adjective you can think of. It’s understandable that many Americans–nay, people in general–have been feeling frustrated and upset by many of the issues leading up to the presidential election next month, and a lot of the negativity has jumped up in the last few weeks alone. No wonder psychologists have declared this the most stressful election season–it’s the chief reason a lot of us have been feeling pretty down and defeated lately.

The election was the first subject brought up last night when actress Emily Blunt hosted Saturday Night Live, and she wasted no time at all in doing whatever she could to lift the audience’s spirits–and all of us watching at home, by extension. Handing out cookies was the first step; handing out puppies was obviously the most logical second. “Everyone’s getting a puppy!” Blunt exclaimed. “This is not just for comedy.” (Okay, even though it was obviously just for comedy, I’d take holding a puppy to help me throw my cares away.)

Massages courtesy of SNL cast member Pete Davidson and personalized cakes from Vanessa Bayer were also handed out–and, to make everybody feel even more warm and fuzzy inside, their moms came out to give them big mom hugs. It was almost enough to make us all forget the toxicity of this election season–even though the show had literally just spoofed the second town hall debate (in which Trump weirdly stalked Hillary around the stage) in its cold open:

Sigh. I’ll take one of those puppies now, please and thanks.
