Since we received confirmation that Jurassic World was only the first in a series of planned films–a trilogy, more specifically–there hasn’t been a ton of info made readily available on the upcoming sequel, which is presently slated for a 2018 release. However, the film’s director, Juan Antonio Bayona, may be letting some more details slip about Jurassic World 2–and apparently, things are going to get a whole lot darker.
In an interview with Noticias RCN (translated from Spanish), Bayona teased a more intense follow-up to the the 2015 film, citing several other famous sequels which also adopted a much darker tone than their predecessors:
It will be darker and scarier then the previous film. Obviously when you have Chris Pratt it will also be very funny. But it will be darker. It is a second step in a trilogy, and the second step is always dark as in The Empire Strikes Back or Wrath of Khan which are the examples you always get. The film takes the story where it has never been before.
Earlier in the week, Bayona had also mentioned that the dinosaurs of the film–and the franchise, by extension–are intended to parallel man’s treatment of animals in today’s world, from medical experiments to keeping wild species caged up in zoos. That certainly jives with past movies in the Jurassic Park franchise, anyway, but Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow (who’s helping to construct the trilogy) has said that the sequel will take a different direction and deal with more complex issues–not simply whether dinosaurs can be militarized for combat uses.
A darker and scarier Jurassic World? It may not mean riding through a jungle with a velociraptor posse, but I could be here for it.
