Wolverine Hates Japan Because It’s Prettier Than Him

Wolverine Vs The Hand from Gary Shore on Vimeo.

No joke, I picked up a Wolverine comic once (I can’t at the moment remember who it was by) that began with these words, in narration, from Wolverine, who was standing in a rain-drenched Japanese graveyard:

“I hate Japan.  It’s so beautiful.”

The upcoming The Wolverine, incredulously directed by Darran Aronofsky himself, is rumored to take place mostly in Asia, and as a Batman fan, I can confidently say that there’s no accessory more powerful to give your movie about a hand to hand combatant other than lots and lots of ninjas.  Where DC’s go-to ninja army is the underlings of the League of Assassins (featured in Batman Begins), Marvel comics have a parallel organization known as The Hand.  The Hand are prominently featured in director Gary Shore‘s short film Wolverine Vs The Hand, which he created to showcase how he would have done the Wolverine sequel, and it proves once and for all that Wolverine need not worry about his looks.

At least while in competition with Japan.

Susana Polo thought she'd get her Creative Writing degree from Oberlin, work a crap job, and fake it until she made it into comics. Instead she stumbled into a great job: founding and running this very website (she's Editor at Large now, very fancy). She's spoken at events like Geek Girl Con, New York Comic Con, and Comic Book City Con, wants to get a Batwoman tattoo and write a graphic novel, and one of her canine teeth is in backwards.
