Ava DuVernay and Stephen Colbert Talk White House Dance Battles and Queen Sugar

Recommended Videos

Director Ava DuVernay went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about the White House birthday party they both attended, her new show Queen Sugar, and her upcoming adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time (which is kind of a big deal, if you haven’t heard).

But first, the Selma director brings up their first meeting, which you think is going to be a cute story about two of your faves being fans of each other, but DuVernay reveals Colbert’s reactions when she said she would be on his show was more along the lines of “oh” and “I’ll know who you are by that time.” Dude. The two laugh about it and she calls him “funny-mean” and other nice things but dude. They go on to talk about Obama’s birthday party which included Paul McCartney, an Usher/Janelle Monae dance battle (which Colbert and Ellen jump into), and other epic activities that we mortals can probably only dream about.

The two then go on to talk the family drama Queen Sugar and the awesomeness of working with Oprah (who apparently will give away baskets of lemons and avocados from her own garden?) and her network. Colbert also brings up how DuVernay has used the show as an opportunity to introduce the world to female directors and African-American directors, which was met with an overwhelming amount of applause.

DuVernay adds she’s honored to direct the beloved classic A Wrinkle in Time, which starts shooting this fall. Also, while she didn’t join in on the White House dance battle, she promises to next time (there’s no doubt she’ll win).
