Here’s the Fan-Made GoldenEye Remake You Didn’t Know You Were Waiting For

Multiplayer only, just like the original game ... right?

GoldenEye 007 wasn’t the first first-person shooter, but for better or worse, it popularized the genre’s multiplayer experience with the Nintendo 64’s built-in four player capabilities. The gameplay was a bit rough by modern standards, partially due to the lack of a second analog stick, but it’s an indisputable classic, and some fans have done the hard work of updating it for PC with some more modern visuals so we can all experience it anew.

There have been other James Bond games, and even an attempt at recapturing the game’s popularity with the GoldenEye 007 title for the Wii, but nothing has been quite the same as the original—except for maybe Nintendo 64’s Perfect Dark. An official update to the original hasn’t happened for reasons probably tied up in rights shared between Nintendo and Rare, who have been bought by Microsoft in the interim, which is where the fans behind GoldenEye: Source come in.

They’ve completely rebuilt and remastered the game for PC (sorry, fellow Mac users) over the course of about ten years, and you can grab version 5.0 for free today. (You can also get an updated version of the soundtrack, which should pluck those nostalgia strings.) Source was, as its name suggests, built with Valve’s Source engine, and the graphics are a pretty nice step up, yet maintain bit of a retro quality to them. There’s no single-player campaign, but let’s be honest—the multiplayer is what we’re all really here for.

… I call Oddjob.
