Hot Wheels Made Your Inner Child’s Dream Come True With a Full-Scale X-Wing Car

Recommended Videos

Before you ask: no, Hot Wheels didn’t actually set out to manufacture a bunch of full-size, drivable X-wing cars. They only made one to help promote the X-wing limited edition car they’re going to be selling at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Bummer, I know. But still, there’s one drivable X-wing car out there, and hey, thanks to this neat video they released, you know it’s possible to make one.

So the thing about this commercial is that it totally reminds me of those weird Matthew McConaughey car commercials where he’s talking in that way that he does about, well, a Lincoln. Just… this time, it’s someone who sounds like McConaughey talking about an X-wing. There’s some bits in the monologue about resisting the Empire and hearing the call of the light side of the Force, and they’re all sprinkled amongst some very car commercial-like lines (“1,000 pounds of steel”). Not saying that’s a bad thing, it just seems very surreal, like it’s in that uncanny valley between the real world and the Star Wars universe. Can’t you just hear someone saying the same things about a consumer-level X-wing, or perhaps a Z-95 headhunter? Yeah. I can.

If you’re looking to build one of your own, it would behoove you to check out the making of video that Hot Wheels also produced.

Nice. I’ll take three, please.
