We can all agree that one of the best parts of the Star Wars prequels was Samuel L. Jackson’s performance as Master Jedi Mace Windu. It was a real tragic moment when Anakin turned on him, cutting his arm off and opening him up to a big old Force Lightning attack from Palpatine, which sent him to his death… or did it? Apparently not so, according to this Twitter Q&A with the man himself. During an IMDb Q&A session, he answered a fan who asked whose idea it was to kill Mace Windu. His answer came with a surprising twist: “In my mind, I’m not dead. Jedis can fall incredibly high distances and not die.”
Entertainment Weekly dug a little further, asking Jackson if he brought this theory up to anybody else, to which the actor replied, “Only George [Lucas].” Oh, and his reaction? Jackson said, “George is like, ‘I’m okay with that. You can be alive.”
That’s right: Mace Windu is still freaking alive. No, I don’t care that it’s all circumstantial or flippant or he said/he said stuff. Point is, the Jedi whose lightsaber is engraved with “Bad Ass Mother F*cker” is still out there waiting for his moment to shine. You’re damned right I’m going to headcanon the heck out of this.
Addressing the fan’s question more fully, Jackson said, “As in most Star Wars movies, it was George Lucas’ idea to kill Mace Windu. He said he killed all these other important characters in all these other movies leading up to that, and he said the only person left to kill that would mean anything in Episode III would be… me.” He cracked a smile at this point, saying, “I was trying to figure out, really, you can’t just like, injure me or whatever?”
Apparently not.
