This New Ghostbusters Theme Sounds Like Peak Fall Out Boy With Some Lovely Missy Elliott

Recommended Videos

I’m going to come right out and say it: I don’t know how to feel about this Ghostbusters song. On the one hand, it feels like peak Fall Out Boy with a nice helping of Missy Elliott for good measure. Two great sounds that should sound great together, no? Well, not exactly.

In all honesty, I think it’s strange because they re-use a lot of the lyrics and stylings of the original theme song while occasionally breaking out into their own riffs (“I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid”). Somewhere halfway through the song, the remnants of the original theme song fades, Missy Elliott gets on the track, and Fall Out Boy does their thing. I almost feel like I would have loved to hear more of either a solid cover of the original or an original song all on their own, not a mashup between those two ideas like we have here.

Of course, this being a movie soundtrack, I suppose one can’t be too picky about what’s offered. It’s strange, to be sure, but by the end of it (and after repeated listenings, you’re welcome, reader), I found that it’s grown on me a little. Well, it has me listening to some emo mariachi realness, at least. Now that’s a lovely Fall Out Boy cover.
