While Ghostbusters doesn’t come out until next month, there’s a chance that we could be in for sequels if it does well. Director Paul Feig has mentioned that there’s no sequel clause in his contract, but it seems like most of the team is up for more. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Melissa McCarthy said she’d love to keep doing more and more Ghostbusters.
I would do 102 more of these. I will literally show up for [director] Paul Feig and these women no matter what. I’ll show up for plays in a backyard.
Y’all hear that? Melissa McCarthy “ruined” your childhood once, and she’ll do it again! 102 times, in fact. She and her gang will take that childhood-ruining act and bring it into your good suburban backyards.
Joking aside, you don’t have to venture too far into the internet to see that Ghostbusters has already been met with a lot of strong opinions (mainly of the sexist kind) despite receiving a thumbs up from the original cast, so it’s great to hear that some loud, negative voices have not discouraged the actors in their goal of making funny movies. They’ve been handling all the comments amazingly well and with astounding patience.
Leslie Jones shared the sentiment, saying, “Well, shit. As many as they do, I’m there.” Feig added that “It’s such a fun world, the sky is the limit. But I think everyone wants to see how this one is going to go first.” Feig has spoken about the pressure of directing female-led comedies before, commenting on how the stakes feel higher. With Bridesmaids, he feared failing meant that it would “be used as a referendum against doing a movie like this” whereas male-centric movies don’t face the same scrutiny.
The original article didn’t have any comments on a potential sequel from Kristen Wiig or Kate McKinnon, but I like to imagine McKinnon just winked and walked away.
