A group of determined fans are dedicated to getting Disney and Lucasfilm back into Star Wars Legends, which is the new name given to the old, no-longer-canon Star Wars expanded universe. They’re so determined in fact, that they rented a billboard in San Francisco (where Lucasfilm is based) to voice their plea for help. Seen above, it asks Lucasfilm to “continue the original expanded universe.” According to a press release, they believe that “there is still a large demand for the Star Wars Legends timeline to be continued as an alternate universe to Disney’s new timeline.”
A bit of history for the unaware: back in 2014, Disney and Lucasfilm caused quite a stir amongst Star Wars fans as they completely “threw out” the Star Wars expanded universe. The books, comics, movies, and media created after the prequels were no longer canon, which is to say that a lot of those stories were essentially sent out to pasture. This was done to make room for the upcoming sequels and the inevitable spin-off properties that would come out of those.
The Give Us Legends group has said that they don’t necessarily want the EU back in canon or anything; they just want to keep playing in the rich world that was created in the many years leading up to 2014. That universe includes some of my own favorite stories, including the Thrawn trilogy, as well as my own personal favorite, the X-Wing Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron series of books. There’s a lot of amazing content to be had in that universe, so I can understand the desire to watch it continue to expand.
