Be Prepared To Relive Edge of Tomorrow — A Sequel is Happening

Recommended Videos

Although Edge of Tomorrow didn’t accumulate initial buzz before its release, it performed surprisingly well in theaters and resonated with fans for a variety of reasons. It gave us a strong, nuanced portrayal of a female character (a female fighter!) in the form of Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski–and even screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie said that a sequel was certainly a possibility. Now, almost a year later, the Edge of Tomorrow sequel is officially moving forward, with McQuarrie set to produce and Doug Liman returning as director.

Tom Cruise was actually the one who supplied the idea for a follow-up story, and it’s his idea being given over to the newcomers of the franchise–Joe Shrapnel and Anna Whitehouse, who will be writing the sequel’s screenplay. Earlier this year, they were the writers behind the movie Race, and their script adaptation of the novel The Gray Man will be turned into a film starring Charlize Theron and directed by McQuarrie.

While the original Edge of Tomorrow was in fact based on a Japanese novel, the title of which translates to All You Need Is Kill, there’s no word yet on whether or not the sequel will build on the source material or go its own way. As long as it gives us more kickass heroines to watch and enjoy, I’ll be showing up to the theater.
