Daisy Ridley and John Boyega Talk Shop About Lightsaber Training for The Force Awakens

The train of Star Wars: The Force Awakens behind-the-scenes content keeps on rolling, this time with some rad lightsaber shop talk between John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. They had trained in sword combat for three months leading up to shooting for The Force Awakens, which (when you considered they trained nearly every day) is a really freaking long time to study one thing.

Especially of note is the fact that the both of them had to keep their training a big, big secret. Remember all that speculation leading up to the film’s release, with everyone dissecting posters and clips and interviews? There was a major quake through much of the internet when that trailer hit, showing Finn wielding the Skywalker family saber. Imagine being unable to talk more about the moment that made the entire world freak out all at once. Their gushing excitement about getting to talk about something they obviously loved so much is definitely palpable–and infectious.

In the clip, Boyega talks about Adam Driver’s intensity during the saber battles, talking about how he’d really get into character as Kylo Ren, putting much more force and weight behind his strikes. The clip—and the behind-the-scenes documentary featured on the Force Awakens blu-Rey—is definitely worth a watch.

Oh! There’s even a nice bit in the clip, showing a gym-clothed out Boyega training with someone who looks to be the stuntman who played the internet’s new favorite stormtrooper, TR-8R. Definitely check it out.
