This EP From “Black Canary” Is Giving Me So Much Life Right Now

Friends, this self-titled EP up on Bandcamp from Black Canary is everything you’d expect it to be and more. If you haven’t heard of Black Canary, here’s what you need to know: they’re a band out of New York, led by Dinah Drake Lance (aka D.D.), with Paloma Terrific handling electronics/keys, Lord Byron on drums, and Ditto on lead guitar. They’ve got a timeless yet all-brand-new sound that harkens back to that classic shoegazey/new wave vibe that seems to be making a bit of a comeback. The entire EP is an absolute treat to listen to, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice to skip this one.

Please give it a shot. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Seriously though: this album is just gorgeous. It’s really amazing to put some voices to the striking personalities present in the Black Canary comic. To be completely honest, this is exactly how I expected the band to sound, and I couldn’t be more excited about that.

Oh, and setting up the Bandcamp page to properly reflect the band? That’s a real nice touch. Just… agh, so good. Look. Whatever it is that’s inspiring folks to play comic book music in real life, I really hope it sticks around, because this stuff is freaking amazing.

In addition to checking out the EP, you should check out the work of the band who takes on the Black Canary mantle: RECEIVERS. Just a quick listen to their “The Air on the Set” album shows you exactly why they were the perfect group to wield the Black Canary name. I think I’ve fallen in love here, friends.
