Welcome to The House of El, the video series where I go beyond the Supergirl recap, delve a little into the DC Comics source material and other incarnations of the character, and hone in on a topic from that week’s episode of CBS’ Supergirl that I find interesting, annoying, or that really sticks in my craw. Wherever my “craw” is.
In this week’s episode, “Human For a Day,” Kara is temporarily powerless, and learns that what makes her a hero goes beyond heat vision and super strength. One of Kara’s greatest skills on this show has been her ability to reach people emotionally; to talk to people and hone in on their wants/needs/motivations and using that interaction to save the day. Now, that could come off as stereotypically “girly,” because women are generally expected to be all touchy-feely and great communicators and whatnot – that is, it could come off that way on any other show but Supergirl. Join me as I talk about the importance of diversity among female characters, and touch on another female character from Greg Berlanti’s DCTV universe, Caitlin Snow on The Flash, for comparison.
Warning: There is some unexpected Gorilla Grodd fan love in this video. I couldn’t help myself. Super-intelligent gorillas are awesome. And yes, I’ve seen Planet of the Apes.
