George Lucas’s Opinion on Star Wars: The Force Awakens Is Good News Whether or Not He Liked It

In case you picked today to resume interest in his take on Star Wars.

We’ve heard from others involved in the movie’s production that George Lucas liked the new Star Wars when he saw it (he still gets some privileges), his exact reaction is a bit different in his own words.

When Vulture posed the question on everyone’s mind to the man who created Star Wars, he answered, “I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.” That response is much more telling than if he’d just said whether or not he liked it, despite leaving out—overtly, anyway—his personal feelings on the film.

See, Lucas has a different idea of what Star Wars is about from the rest of us. He recently told Vanity Fair,

The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems—it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘Fine.’

If the family drama is what drives the story as far as Lucas is concerned, I don’t know why it took him until the end of Empire Strikes Back to get into it—or why the prequels handled the relationship stuff so awkwardly. That aside, if his opinion on the entire franchise is that the fans have got it all wrong … well, the fans should be pretty happy that he thinks this movie will please them even if it doesn’t please him.

In short, this is the Star Wars sequel you’re looking for.
