The first gay marriages have just officially been performed in Ireland! Ireland had made history as the first country in the world that approved gay marriage via popular vote, and the very first couple to wed–Cormac Gollogly and Richard Dowling–have been waiting a long time for this. After being together for 12 years, and engaged for two, they finally realized their dream in an official ceremony in South Tipperary.

According to the Irish Times, who interviewed the couple, they were the “first same sex couple to be civilly married in Ireland at 8:40am on Tuesday.” But they won’t be the only couple–there’s even more folks scheduled to be married today, as well.

You’ll remember that JK Rowling was stoked about Ireland’s move approve same sex marriage, and was met with some resistance from none other than the Westboro Baptist Church. She wrecked destroyed *ahem* responded with the kind of wit and candor befitting a best selling author.

It’s a real red letter day for Ireland! Cheers!
