There are a lot of fairytale retellings popping up lately—we’ve already gotten to see another take on Cinderella, and the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson is slated for a 2017 release. Now, one more story is going to be adapted for the silver screen—and they’ve just announced their leading lady.

Carrie actress Chloe Moretz will be playing the titular role in the upcoming live-action Little Mermaid film. While most of the details still have yet to surface, it’s being reported that screenwriter Richard Curtis (who penned films like Love Actually and Notting Hill) is in talks to write the script.

Earlier this year, Sofia Coppola had actually been attached to the project, but left due to “creative differences with the studios”. (There are also rumors that Coppola’s departure was a byproduct of casting; while Moretz had always been the studios’ first pick, inside sources are claiming that Coppola didn’t agree with the choice.)

The Disney musical version is likely the one most audiences are familiar with, but it’s unclear if this film will give the mermaid her happy ending or not since the original Hans Christian Andersen version is more bittersweet.

What do you think of this casting news? Are there any other names you’d like to see working on this film?
