Hotel That Inspired The Shining Remodeling as a Destination for Horror Fans

The Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining, famously adapted by Stanley Kubrick, was inspired by The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and it’ll (hopefully) soon become a destination for fans of the horror film and the horror genre.

The hotel, which first opened in 1909, recently announced plans to create a building that would house a film production studio and film archive, called the Stanley Film Center. Elijah Wood and Simon Pegg, among others, are on the founding board. The LA Times reports the Center would run as a nonprofit public-private partnership. It will include an auditorium, museum, traveling film exhibits (such as The Walking Dead), a sound stage, and post-production and editing space. They’d also create education projects in collaborations with the Colorado Film School in Denver.

The Stanley hopes to get the funds they’re seeking from Colorado tourism to create their “year-round horror destination.” While popularity of The Shining is the biggest selling point, the additional spaces make the Stanley Film Center sound really appealing to me, rather than a cheap marketing ploy. What do you think?
