Jennifer Lopez now has something much better than American Idol. She has just been named the UN’s first Global Advocate for Women and Girls.
Now, I’m not exactly sure what the difference is between her being the UN Global Advocate for Women and Girls and Emma Watson being the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, but as she stated regarding her first UN event pictured above:
I will be able to use my voice to bring attention and awareness to important issues such as #healthcare for mothers #visibility for all women and #genderequality With the goal of making sure woman all over the world are #SHEE Safe, Healthy, Educated and Empowered! It is my honor and I am humbled to be given this privilege.
Lopez isn’t a stranger to activism and philanthropy. She and her sister Lynda founded the Lopez Family Foundation back in 2009, a non-profit focused on access to healthcare for women and children. However, this new position will broaden her scope significantly. It’s pretty cool to have a Latina in this position, as she mentioned in her statement that this is about “all women.” I also hope that includes women on the LGBTQ+ spectrum worldwide as well, as they are often forgotten in conversations about Women.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Lopez takes on in her new role, and am pleased that the UN continues to make women’s rights and needs a priority.
