First Laurie, Now Leia: How Scream Queens is Saluting Star Wars

Expected it, we should have.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen the series premiere of Scream Queens, the new horror comedy from Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Glee). But I’m sure most of you have seen the original Star Wars films. So either way, you should appreciate this subtle, fun nod to the latter.

In case you didn’t know, in addition to previously established horror gals Emma Roberts (Scream 4, AHS) and Jamie Lee Curtis (uhthe Halloween series, Prom Night, Terror Train), Scream Queens features actress Billie Lourd. In the show, Billie plays a character named Chanel No. 3 (Emma Roberts’ sorority supremacist character, Chanel, names her minions after herself, with Abigail Breslin also playing Chanel No. 5). And Chanel. No. 3 likes to wear earmuffs at all times, even coordinating them with her given outfit.

At first glance, you might wonder if Chanel No. 3 is making a bold fashion statement, or simply pulling a Rupert Giles (i.e. instead of cleaning her glasses so she can’t see what the Scoobies are doing, she’s putting on these muffs to drown out Chanel’s rude remarks). But in truth, she’s paying tribute to Billie’s mother, Carrie Fisher.

Yes, Chanel No. 3’s earmuffs are a nod to none other than Princess Freakin’ Leia (oh, and according to Scream Queens co-creator Brad Falchuk, they also have some sort of significance within the show, or something). Yes, we should have seen this before.

I’m still not sure where I stand on Scream Queens, which spews insults as much as it spews blood (this sounds awesome and Heathers-esque, but it’s more offensive). But I have to say that this subtle reference, in addition to the news that Jamie Lee Curtis will be doing an homage to mom Janet Leigh’s shower scene in Psycho and throwing Halloween fans a few Easter eggsdefinitely hooks me in a bit. I mean, what else do they have in store?

What do you think of Scream Queens? Do you care about it? Also, hands up if you’re still hoping that Billie’s gonna play Young Leia in The Force Awakens!
