C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) Wishes the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Secrecy Would End Already, Like the Rest of Us

C-3PO: human-spoiler relations.

J.J. Abrams’ love of the element of surprise (and Disney’s marketing experts) has made details on the plot of The Force Awakens scarce—we haven’t even seen the Skywalker twins in the first two trailers—but Anthony Daniels, C-3PO veteran, thinks enough is enough.

That might have something to do with his feelings on how special the movie’s story is in the first place. In an interview with The Guardian, Daniels let it slip that he wasn’t exactly geeking out over the movie’s details as we’d hope everyone would be: “When J.J. told me the story of the new one, my eyes sort of glazed over.”

Yikes. That’s not exactly the ringing endorsement you’d want to hear about a new Star Wars movie (though others have expressed quite different feelings). Maybe there’s a reason they asked Daniels to keep his mouth shut? Either way, the extent of the Disney spoiler police is pretty entertaining, at least. When Daniels tweeted about a Force Awakens costar, Disney’s retribution was swift:

I said that I’d met so-and-so. An actor who plays a … thing in the film. A character. Immediately I received a message from Disney: ‘Remove the tweet! You’re not allowed to say that!’ Honestly. It’s a kind of Kremlin attitude. Look, I know perfectly well not to tell you now what I’m giving you for a Christmas present because it would spoil the surprise. And these films are all about opening the box on Christmas Day.

But despite knowing the value of secrecy, Daniels is still fed up, saying, “The secrecy has been beyond ludicrous. For heaven’s sake, it’s a movie. When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it. I got a hangover just reading it.”

To be fair, C-3PO did always have kind a big mouth—maybe Disney has been keeping an extra eye on him? Even Daniels himself is tired of hearing 3PO talk:

Sometimes I hear myself and think: ‘Oh, shut up.’ I recorded a C-3PO satnav and they gave me one to keep. I was driving in France with it. My voice was saying to me ‘At the next roundabout, take the fifth exit …’ and do you know what? I really started to get on my nerves.

So maybe take his seeming disillusionment with Star Wars with a grain of salt.
