Disney Channel Developing Movie About Little League Phenom, Mo’ne Davis

Because apparently, being the first girl to pitch a shut-out game in the Little League World Series and the first Little League player ever to make the cover of Sports Illustrated (not only because of her insane pitching arm, but her talent in basketball and soccer, too) at thirteen isn't enough. Now, sports prodigy Mo'ne Davis is having her story adapted into a movie by the Disney Channel.

Because apparently, being the first girl to pitch a shut-out game in the Little League World Series and the first Little League player ever to make the cover of Sports Illustrated (not only because of her insane pitching arm, but her talent in basketball and soccer, too) at thirteen isn’t enough. Now, sports prodigy Mo’ne Davis is having her story adapted into a movie by the Disney Channel.

Throw Like Mo is being executive produced by Debra Martin, who produced The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and written by Sheldon Candis and Justin Wilson, who penned A Slave in the White House. Davis herself will consult on the project as well.

She seems thrilled by the opportunity; one of many that seems to be coming her way these days!

“There are so many great things happening to me right now and it’s a very exciting time in my life,” said Davis. “A year ago, I never would have thought that Disney Channel would make a movie about me. I can’t wait to get started and I hope it will encourage other viewers to believe that dreams really do come true.”

I’m thrilled for this, too, as Davis’ story is incredibly inspiring, and I hope she goes on to play sports professionally if she so chooses. I have a niece who’s great at sports, and I’d be forced to cringe whenever older relatives would talk about her interest in sports as if it were a passing phase, because “girls don’t really play sports.” Hopefully, a film like this will ensure that parents understand that not only do girls play sports, but they can excel at them.
