Though JK Rowling’s epic saga of teenagers in boarding school almost entirely avoided the topic of sex, two grad interns at Boston University want to use Hogwarts to open up a broader conversation about sexual education. Michelle Goode and Jamie Klufts will be holding a seminar tonight at BU called “Sex-Ed at Hogwarts” (under the banner “I always use Protego”), and over eighty students have already signed up. Part of the school’s Frisky February, BU Wellness and Prevention Services have been running educational seminars all month, including an appearance by Laci Green.
The seminar asks,
Ever wonder what it would be like if Hogwarts taught Sexual Education? With all of those adolescent wizards and witches running around we think it would be useful. At this event half-bloods, house-elves, and muggles alike will learn the proper way to get consent to enter one’s chamber of secrets and how to snog without getting hogwarts.
Klufts, who works with the Wellness and Prevention Services, said that “[a] lot of students entering college don’t actually get a foundation in sexual health, so we are going back to the basics, and finding ways to loop in references and scenarios from Harry Potter.”
“We’re using the references as an opening and avenue to get the conversations started,” elaborated Goode.
I’ll be honest, about 90% of my own sexual education came from NC-17Â Harry Potter fanfiction (shout-out to Ashwinder), so this seems like a great idea before students head to their own personal Shrieking Shacks.
The ninety-minute seminar starts at 7:30pm tonight at Boston University in CAS room 313.
