Street Fighter and Tekken Crossovers Are Gonna Happen, If You Haven’t Heard

If you’ve been following the Comic-Con buzz, it’s no doubt ancient news to you that Street Fighter and Tekken are teaming up in not one, but two crossover games. Well, as a matter of record: Street Fighter and Tekken are teaming up in not one, but two crossover games. Capcom and Namco will be working together to bring us Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter, the former of which will be released in 2012 and the release date and other info for the latter of which still remains murky.

Why the two different games?Street Fighter and Tekken are very different games, and Capcom and Namco have evidently decided that splitting the difference makes less sense than building one game to feature each engine. This admittedly sets off a red flag — why not accept the differences and make a Capcom vs. SNK-style game that incorporates both or even switches between the two? Worried theories about creative gridlock aside, Street Fighter X Tekken, the game we know a lot more about, looks promising.

Capcom’s press release doesn’t shed too much light on the game (a fighting game with versus, training, and tag team modes?) but it at least helps confirm to us that this is a real thing and not just the fevered dream of the Internet:

Utilizing the same technology that powered Street Fighter IV & Super Street Fighter IV, Tekken characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will make the transition into the Street Fighter universe having been re-imagined using the much-loved art style of these seminal titles; while retaining their unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head-to-head with classic brawlers from the Street Fighterfranchise in what promises to be the ultimate match up.

As in Street Fighter IV, 2D gameplay will feature fully realized 3D character models battling for domination in both new and familiar highly detailed environments that are brought to life with engaging animations. In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements to make the fighting experience more in-depth and enjoyable, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.

We’ve heard that the news pretty much blew away attendees at Capcom’s Comic-Con panel, where the rumored game was revealed by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. Judging by the teaser trailer below, we think you can see why:
