Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston to Play TV Spies Together in The Night Manager

Awww, Hugh guys!

Start your Six Degrees of Separation games, because Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston are set to star in a joint American/British television adaptation of John le Carré’s The Night Manager. (I originally mistyped that as Sex Degrees of Separation, and now Sam and Carolyn are urging me to keep it in.)

The show will be Laurie’s first return to television since House, and Hiddleston’s first recurring television role in about ten years. It’s as yet unconfirmed, at least according to The Hollywood Reporter, who the actors will be playing in the series, but there are some safe bets we can make based on the plot of The Night Manager itself.

The 1993 novel, set in the U.K. during the Cold War, concerns a British soldier turned concierge at a high end hotel, whose contact with a woman attempting to betray an organized crime syndicate envelops him in a web of intelligence community bureaucracy and danger when he agrees to infiltrate the syndicate as a double agent for the Crown. Both actors are understood to be starring in the series, we can probably place money on Hiddleston carrying the central role of Jonathan Pine, with Laurie either as an older British intelligence agent or as the gun-runner Richard Onslow Roper himself.

The BBC are already on board to air the series in the U.K., while production company Ink Factory shops the show around US networks for an American release as well. So perhaps here’s one British spy drama that American fans of Laurie and Hiddleston won’t have to wait to see?
