Doctor Who‘s Kate O’Mara, aka The Rani, Has Gone to the Great Time Machine in the Sky

Ditto Derek Martinus, the British director who helmed many well-loved episodes of classic Who. Dangit, can people stop dying, already? This isn’t cool. Someone figure out regeneration.

Kate O’Mara, 74, died at a Sussex nursing home after sufferinga short illness. Though some may best know her for her work on the ’80s Southern soap Dynasty, to geeks she’ll always be The Rani, the renegade Time Lady and nemesis of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. Sixth Doctor Colin Baker Tweeted his condolences, saying:

The actress recently expressed her wish to come back to the show to Digital Spy, saying “I would love to come back… I have white hair now, but a lot of it, and I’m still very glamorous and so I won’t disappoint, I hope! I’ll still be wearing the tight leather trousers and high-heel boots, regardless of what age! That’s what the fans are expecting, so that’s what you’ve got to give them.”

Unfortunately, that will never happen now. Also no longer with us is Derek Martinus, director of several of the First, Second, and Third Doctors’ episodes. Among them are The Ice Warriors and The Spearhead from Space, the latter being Doctor Who‘s first serial filmed in color. Martinus, who had been suffering from Alzheimer’s, was 82.
