Amy Poehler and Orange is the New Black‘s Natasha Lyonne Making Comedy About Old People

And So It Begins

Amy Poehler and NBC are up to something, and it’s going to star Natasha Lyonne. Interested yet?

The pilot script for the new show was delivered only three days ago, but has already been greenlit by NBC for pilot production. (That is, the pilot gets filmed, and if the executives like the pilot, they’ll order a series.) Natasha Lyonne is already in the starring role of “a young woman who’s trying to find herself,” who spends her days as “the aide to a group of opinionated elderly people.” The tentative title is Old Soul. Says NBC chariman Bob Greenblatt:

It’s been a while since The Golden Girls gave us a funny and insightful ensemble of seniors, and I hope this show will do that too… There’s great actors available to play roles like this.We spend a lot of time looking for 20‑ and 30‑somethings and not that much time looking for 60‑somethings.So we just thought it was a different way to go with a comedy landscape that starts to feel very familiar and homogeneous.

Co-created by Poehler, the show is part of a newly announced three-year deal between the actress, NBC, and Universal TV to create television projects. She’ll be juggling that deal with Parks & Recreation for at least another year or so, as the show was just renewed for its seventh season.
