Classic Doctor Says He’s Back For the 50th, But Don’t Get Your Hopes Up Just Yet

It Goes Ding When There's Stuff

We’re going to be skeptical about this because the first rule of Doctor Who 50th Anniversary speculation is, of course: trust no one. Warning: click the jump and you enter the realm of spoilers!

If you guessed 4th Doctor Tom Baker, then you got it right! Baker told the Huffington Post:

“I am in the special. I’m not supposed to tell you that, but I tell you that very willingly and specifically; the BBC told me not to tell anybody but I’m telling you straightaway.”

This is big news, and after Paul McGann‘s surprise appearance in the minisode, I think that it’s very possible that Tom Baker (and maybe some other classic series veterans) will be back for the special in full force, even those we have been told aren’t involved. However, Baker being “in the special” could also mean a number of other, less exciting things, including a tiny cameo appearance, recycling old footage, or a voiceover. A representative from the BBC wouldn’t confirm Baker’s appearance, only saying:

“As with William Hartnell‘s recent appearance in the last season finale, anything is possible in Doctor Who. But nothing is certain.”

We do know that, at the very least, there will be a lady wearing Tom Baker’s famous scarf. Maybe she figures somehow into Four’s appearance in the episode, the circumstances of which Baker did not reveal but called “extraordinary.”

The BBC is often very good at keeping details about the 50th anniversary special under wraps, so I think that Baker must have had permission to reveal this information and was just playing up the secrecy for effect. If that’s the case, there might be something about his appearance that’s even more surprising than just the fact that he is there at all. Maybe it has something to do with Clara, or an interaction with the War Doctor?

In the same interview, Baker also talked about how positive his experience on the show was and what the Doctor means to him as a character:

“I identified very much with the character of the benevolent alien who wanted to heal the wounds of the silly people who couldn’t get on together. I was Doctor Who before I got it and I remained Doctor Who since I did it. There wasn’t much difference except apart from the miraculous aspect of being able to disappear and reappear, apart from the mechanical dog and beautiful assistants and Daleks — it was very much like my life.”

Well, all we can do is hope that you’ve really filmed a full-fledged return. My fingers are crossed, but my expectations are low. That way, I’ll either be right, or pleasantly surprised. All will be revealed when the special airs three days from now (three days!) on November 23.
