Bret McKenzie Is Developing An Animated Series About NASA

I'll Allow It

Bret McKenzie, otherwise known as the 50% of Flight of the Conchords that isn’t Jemaine Clement, is teaming up with Fox to develop an animated series. At this point, I have one question for you, Mr. McKenzie: will it be a musical?

Probably not. The show doesn’t have a title yet, but it’s described as “the exploits of a group of employees toiling away at an almost-obsolete NASA space center in Boulder, Colorado.” So, no songs, but possibly aliens and a whole lot of nerd jokes. Not a bad start. I’m still holding out hope for at least a musical episode. After all, pretty much everything Bret Mckenzie does has a musical angle, like Flight of the Conchords, of course, but also his Oscar-winning soundtrack for The Muppets, and his plans to write a fairy-tale comedy musical. Somebody has to sing at some point, right? At the very least, I’m sure it will have a killer theme song.

For this project, McKenzie is teaming up with writers Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May. Both have written for Fox’s animated line-up before on King of the Hill.

I’m less excited about the prospect of another Fox cartoon for grown-ups than I am about the aforementioned fairy-tale musical (he said it would be like Labyrinth!). Still, Bret McKenzie’s writing, Bret McKenzie’s beard, possibly Bret McKenzie’s New Zealand accent – I’m not going to not watch it (I’m aware that we won’t be able to see the beard in a cartoon, but I’ll know it’s there). No news yet on the animation style, potential characters or cast, or when the show is scheduled to premiere. It’s…not quite business time yet, but we’re getting there. We’re getting there.
