16-year-old boy shoots through door locks of Oregon elementary school, killing four. Minutes later, police arrive and find the gunman dead

‘Senseless tragedy.’

A shocking incident unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, when a 16-year-old boy shot through locked doors, entered the building and ended up killing three children and a teacher. Just minutes after the attack began, a community member heroically intervened, shooting the gunman dead before police arrived.

According to the BBC, the horrifying sequence of events began on the afternoon of October 15, 2026. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that authorities received the first emergency call at 12:59 PM local time. The initial report came from a person in a vehicle who stated that an unknown suspect was shooting at their car multiple times with a long gun. Photos later released from the scene showed a red truck with bullet holes.

Within minutes, the local county dispatch was inundated with dozens of 911 calls. These reports indicated that the attacker had forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary School. Police said the teenager shot at the locks on the doors to gain entry. This is particularly jarring since local media reports suggested the school had received new classroom doors in 2022. These newer doors were designed to be locked with the simple flip of a switch.

The school, which serves around 450 children and employs over 40 adult staff members, went into lockdown at 1:01 PM. Teacher Kathy Sheil Smith said, “Some kids were praying, some kids were consoling other kids. I’m sure that every teacher at the school thought ‘Today is the day that I am going to die.'”

The situation took a crucial turn thanks to a bystander who witnessed the shooting begin to unfold. They pursued the attacker and engaged him. Police confirmed that this individual shot the suspect dead. Emergency Medical Services dispatch audio recordings even suggested the individual was possibly the parent of a pupil at the school.

First officers arrived at the scene at 1:02 PM, just three minutes after the school went into lockdown. They confirmed the suspect was dead. Officers then immediately cleared the school to ensure there were no additional threats. They rendered emergency aid to the victims. Authorities later located five people who had succumbed to their injuries, including the suspect.

The three children killed in the attack were aged 5, 8, and 11

A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were also critically injured and taken to a hospital. Bend Police said the families of the victims had all been notified. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the bystander who “heroically intervened” to prevent further loss of life. “Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden,” Governor Kotek said during a media briefing. “I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well.”

Law enforcement said the suspect used a pump-action shotgun. This weapon was reportedly purchased by his mother. In Oregon, individuals under the age of 18 cannot legally buy a firearm. However, the state does permit juveniles to possess a firearm with parental permission, but only for specific uses like hunting.

Oregon has enacted a broad range of gun safety laws in recent years. Gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety ranks Oregon 12th out of 50 states for the strictness of its gun laws.

The FBI’s local office is actively assisting local law enforcement with the investigation

According to The Guardian, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed their presence on the scene. Krantz said that this would be a “long investigation.” He assured the community that police would maintain a large presence at the school for the next few days. “There are not really any words I can say to any of you that will make this better,” he expressed. “But please know that we are working hard to ensure that we conduct a thorough investigation.”

The community of Bend, home to about 100,000 residents, gathered for a candlelit vigil in Drake Park on Thursday. Hundreds came together to share songs and prayers as the sun set. Messages like “never again” and “be at peace” were written in chalk on the ground, surrounded by flowers and candles.

Mayor Melanie Kebler said, “Like so many in our community, I’m struggling to make sense of a loss that feels unimaginable.” Governor Kotek echoed these sentiments. “My heart is absolutely broken today, and our hearts will stay broken in the days and weeks ahead,” she stated. “My daily prayers will be with this community, with the children, with the parents, and with the educators.” She added, “All Oregonians mourn this loss today. This is a horrible day.”

Steven Cook, the superintendent of Bend-La Pine schools, released an emotional statement to reporters. “We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Cook said. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing.”

All schools in Bend and La Pine, a neighboring city, remained closed on Friday

Officials emphasized that the community needed time to heal. Michael Kohn, a reporter with Bulletin newspaper, noted the profound impact on parents. “It’s just something you don’t expect to happen in Bend, Oregon. It’s a mountain town,” Kohn explained. He also mentioned that students inside the school were able to communicate with parents outside using their Apple watches during the lockdown.

This incident adds to a disturbing trend. According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, there were 235 shooting incidents at American schools last year. This year, at least 140 incidents have already been recorded. This latest tragedy in Bend underscores the ongoing challenges schools and communities face nationwide.
