Favorite Rumor of the Day: Spice Girls To Reunite For Closing Ceremony of 2012 London Olympics

The Spice Girls’ 1997 film Spice World was probably a terrible, terrible movie — it was a campy, poorly-written, and ridiculous, but I loved it to death and I still watch it on occasion because the Spice Girls changed the world with the music. Seriously! How many people can really say they didn’t love “Wannabe” or “Spice Up Your Life”? Unfortunately, whenever I think back on dancing to Spice Girls jams, I always have to remind myself I’m no longer in the musical era of girl-power girl bands. So while it’s almost certainly not true, based on the source, me and other Spice Girl fans can at least entertain the fantasy that the pop girl group sensation will be reuniting to perform at at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony. You crazy 90s kids.

Rumors have been floating around that Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton(Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) will join Jessie J, George Michael, Take That, and The Who for the grand finale of the 2012 London Olympics, which will take place August 12th. At least… according to The Daily Mail. Rumor has it that while the rest of the group was always keen to perform for the Olympics, Victoria Beckham refused to appear.

However, during an interview on the radio this past Thursday, Victoria Beckham mentioned the pop group’s plans and her excitement to perform again in the same breath: “I don’t know about a comeback tour, but I loved being back with the girls…we are very excited about the Olympics,” she said, mentioning that she “would love nothing more” than to reunite the gang.

That’s what it takes to get the rumor mill going: a source has told MailOnline that Geri might wear her iconic Union Jack dress, the sensational fashion choice that struck the world during the 1997 Brit Awards. According to the same source, the Spice Girls will perform their breakout hit 1996 track “Wannabe” as one of the two songs they’ll be performing. So, since this is coming from The Daily Mail, it’s all take this with a grain of salt considering they’re probably wrong, but hey, a gal can hope, right?

Personally, I’d be beyond excited to see the Spice Girls perform again. Considering that this year’s Olympic games is chock-full of girl power, it seems pretty fitting as well. Now there’s only one question: will they have to jump the Tower Bridge to make it to the show on time?
