Gina Torres Loves Everyone Who Thinks She Should Be Wonder Woman

She is a superhero that has been a part of my life since I can remember, and it is incredibly gratifying and heartwarming and wonderful that this campaign continues to have a life — even though it might be maybe three or four people that are keeping it alive. [Big laugh.] I love them! I don’t know how realistic it is. Of course I would love to do that. Who wouldn’t in their right mind? And why not? Well, there are all kinds of reasons why not. But yes, it is a fantasy. And it’s a hoot. It’s a hoot that every now and then, all these years go by, and people are still thinking that I could do that; I could make that wonderful and they will come and see it. I can’t even tell you how that feels.Gina Torres to Vulture.

I think it’s safe to say there are more than three or four people who are pro a Gina Torres-lead Wonder Woman adaptation, but what we really need is for the right three or four people to be pro a Gina Torres-lead Wonder Woman adaptation. Check out the full interview for Torres talking about how she doesn’t have to act barefoot in Suits just so that the male lead can be the tallest person in the shot.

I wish we lived in a world where I believed we’d ever see Gina Torres as Wonder Woman. That’s a beautiful dream.

I’d love to see one of the various DC shows/ movies just stick her in there as a cameo and see what happened. Unlikely, I know.

She made a great Super Woman in Crisis On Two Earths!

I couldn’t agree with you more!

  • Adam R. Charpentier

Eh, I’d rather have someone that looks the part.

  • alk

She is a wonderful woman, and I think she’d be and look the part perfectly! If only there were a chance, right?

  • http://www.hunterblackcomics.com/ Justin Peniston

I swear, I just posted something about wanting her to play Wonder Woman TODAY.

  • http://www.hunterblackcomics.com/ Justin Peniston

More than anything else, I want someone else who pulls off the character. Gina Torres is the only person that can do that who comes to mind for me.

  • Anonymous

She DOES look the part. She looks badass!

  • Herbert West

I would love to see it happen, but if it doesn’t soon, I fear she may start being a bit old for the role, maybe? Unless they change the story so that Diana is 40+ when she starts ‘heroing’ about, that is. Or maybe she could be Hyppolyta and get a lot of screen time if the first movie is an origins story on Themyscira? After seeing her as Michonne, I thought Danai Gurira could do a good, kick-ass WW.

  • Anonymous

She’s too ‘mature’ for the part but I would love to see her cast as Etta Candy or Philippus.

  • Herbert West

I think he means she has to be of another ethnic group.

FWIW, I would like a Themyscira where the amazons are darker in complexion than the usual modern depiction.

  • Albert T. Colon

as awesome an actress and as true an amazonian goddess princess as your gonna get in these days and times… period!

    HELL MOTHERFRACKIN YESSSSSSSS!!!!!

Please, God, if she won’t do Wonder Woman, at least give her an opportunity to be an ass-kicking Storm. Who else could rip the heart out of her opponent and secure her dominance as the leader. Either one will do. I will die a happy person…

  • Adam R. Charpentier

    She’s too old.

  • http://runt.org/ Adrian

If they’re doing Batman vs. Superman now, maybe they might stick to a whole versus theme for the series. I wonder if we could see Wonder Woman vs. Superman after that…

  • Erin O’Riordan

Gina Torres is so gorgeous and talented – whatever role the lady wants, just give it to her.

  • Anonymous

I had never thought of it before, but now I’m on board 100%!

  • http://anna.balasi.com/ AnnaB

I’m going to be optimistic and think this could happen in my lifetime.

  • http://runt.org/ Adrian

Wonder Woman wouldn’t approve of you giving up, Bryant. Wonder Woman doesn’t give up. Wonder Woman fights on.

  • Alice Ruppert

I love her on Suits, where she plays this ass-kicking company leader who doesn’t take shit from any man or woman.
I am not overly excited for any wonder woman movie, mainly because I don’t know much about the character, but if Gina Torres was in it, I’d be immediately hyped. I’m not even kidding.

  • Anonymous

If she can’t do Wonder Woman, I wish there wasn’t such a lack of prominent black superheroines for her to play. Outside of Storm (who is owned by Fox right now) there’s not a large number of notable black heroines. :|

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

If she can’t be Diana, she should be Hippolyta.

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

    SOLD.

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

Heck, if comics can whitewash the Amazons, then the movies should be able to flip it back right?

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

    What about Sue Storm?

  • Anonymous

Vixen, Monica Rambeau (the original female Captain Marvel, who sadly can’t hold onto a codename), and Monet St. Croix spring to mind.

  • Nirali

There are two people in this world right now who can play Wonder Woman. Gina Torres and Meryl Streep.

  • Angela

    She could still play Nubia.

  • Anonymous

I wish I could invent a time machine and go back ten years ago, where a Justice League movie could be made with Torres as Wonder Woman and Nathan Filion as Hal Jordan but that window is sadly probably closed. Still, if there were more action films starring women, she could have the part of the scene-stealing badass mentor. They should sign her for that female Expandables movie.

  • http://offthemall.org/ Bryant Turnage

I’d actually like to see a movie that explores the trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, three of the core Justice League members who have such a strong relationship. If it looks at them in their later years, as the Affleck Batman is supposed to be, then an “older” WW like that would fit in perfectly.

  • Angela

Vixen, Misty Knight, Fox, Bumble Bee, etc.

  • Anonymous

Amanda Waller (ok, villian-ish, but still). That said, there are probably a dozen great black actresses who could rock the hell out of the role.

We’ve got such talented actresses all around that it’s really a shame that there are so few roles being made for them.

  • Anonymous

That’d rock with Michael B. Jordon as Johnny.

  • Mina

It’s definitely more than three or four people. Heck, sometimes it feels like I’m the only one who doesn’t want that. (Not that I’m against it, mind you. She could be pretty great in the role. It’s just not necessarily in my hopes and dreams. But I’d take it gladly.)

  • Anonymous

Since Wonder Woman is made from living clay like a golem rathan than being Hippolyta’s biological daughter she can easily be a different race without needing much explanation for the change.

  • John W

It’s weird I’m scrolling down the screen and in one shot on my screen there’s the post for Gina Torres speaking about Wonder Woman and right below it is a post about Gabby Douglas. That has to be more than coincidence.

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

Plus, then you could have Valeria & Franklin!

  • http://mordicai.livejournal.com Mordicai

That is also true. There are about a zillion easy ways to diversify characters. Heck, Crisis did, but all those guys got mothballed eventually, which is a bummer. Me, if I got a Crisis to run, I’d probably just switch up everybody’s race & not even mention it. Oh Hal Jordan has an ethnically Asian background now? Okay!

  • chris

I have loved GT since she was Iolaus Amazon girlfriend back in Hercules TLJ. She also had a short lived show afterwards that was promptly cancelled, but Hell Yes to her being WW. Aint gonna happen though. You know theyre gonna pick some white Tween from hollyweird =(

  • Anonymous

Ah yes Vixen was an old fave of mine from JLU!

  • Anonymous

It’s telling that whenever this point comes up, people have to list characters. Imagine if you tried to do that with a group that was well-represented.

“Hey, there aren’t many white male heroes of note in the MCU.”
    “What about Ant-Man?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/nuuni.nuunani Nuuni Nuunani

Oh my gosh! That was her?! Golly she was such a memorable character!

  • Mandy

You must still be hating a bunch of Avengers castings then. Did you protest Robert Downey Jr & Mark Ruffalo’s casting too? Because RDJ was born in 1965 & Ruffalo in 1967. Jeremy Renner in 1971 fyi. (Back in the day Michael Keaton was 38 I believe when he played Batman. As was Bale as of TDKR.)

Gina Torres was born in 1969.

Unless you are implying that only women can be too old for superhero parts while dudes can continue playing them as they age.

I don’t think it’s a reach at all to have a more mature and experiances actress as Diana at all. There would be a lot of expectations hanging on such a role. To cast an unknow or just someone with the right body type but no acting experiance would be a way to trip up right at the start.

  • Alyson L

I wish! I so utterly wish!

I am just concerned she is getting older but she would be a wonderful Amazon no matter what. Cleopatra 2525!!!

  • Alyson L

I think its more of an issue that the Wonder Woman origin story is very much a coming of age story – her entry into independence and womanhood, if they go with her story of leaving.

Hulk and Ironman, if I remember, are not coming of age stories. Banner was an established scientist and Ironman was older. Plus, Banner had his origin movie about 10 or more years ago.

  • Mandy

That is a good point. *hat tip*. I think Iron Man is a story about the MC maturing (in recent years at least) but you are right I really wouldn’t consider it a coming of age story. (I’m a pretty new WW fan. How old is she usually supposed to be when she sets off for Man’s World?)

I just get so mad when people (mostly dudes) complain about how women are too old for certain parts when I’ve rarely, if ever, heard it discussed about how a male actor is too old for the part. Also, I love watching Gina Torres and would love to see her in a more ass kicking role again asap. In reality I’m totally on the bandwagon that other people who have mentioned she should totally play Diana’s mother at least. (also in this imaginary film Lucy Lawless needs to be an Amazon as well. For obvious reasons.)

When they announced the X-men movie, I had Gina and Angela Bassett for Storm… and then they got Halle Berry and my dreams of a smart complex Goddess dissolved into nothingness

  • http://runt.org/ Adrian

I read this comment in Morgan Freeman’s voice. That’s your plan, isn’t it?

  • Adam R. Charpentier

Good point: Robert Downey Jr. is starting to look his age, as well.

  • Nirali

A good villain never reveals his plans.

  • Gneiss_and_a_little_wacke

Oh my god! I am ashamed to say that this has never occurred to me… but now that the idea is planted in my head I can’t picture anyone else in the role!

  • Alyson L

I agree. I would love it as well, she is absolutely amazing and I would love to see her as WW but if not then her mother.
