Obi-Wan Kenobi in the films

Did You Catch Ewan McGregor’s Cameo in The Force Awakens?

It's tiny, but it's there.

A few years back, when the prospect of new Star Wars movies was as tiny and invisible to the naked eye as, say, a cluster of midichlorians, actor Ewan McGregor was convinced he wasn’t going to have any part in them in a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Returning to the same show earlier this week to promote his new film, Jane’s Got a Gun, McGregor said that he would’ve been happy to have anything to do with the new movies–he was just waiting for a call! Turns out he got one at the eleventh hour from director J.J. Abrams asking him to come in and record a small line of dialogue for The Force Awakens:

If you’ve been scouring the Internet for any behind-the-scenes information on the movie, you might already know this–but the voice Rey hears in her vision after touching Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber? That’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s an amalgam of both McGregor and the late Sir Alec Guinness, using dialogue McGregor recorded in the studio blended with audio taken from one of the previous Star Wars films.

I have to say, I appreciate The Force Awakens more and more when I hear about little facts like these, because it’s proof that Abrams and the rest of the crew behind the film really cared about every single aspect being true to the franchise–including one line of voiceover dialogue.
