John Tiffany, former associate director of National Theatre of Scotland and a member of the Harry Potter play “dream team,” shared his history with J.K. Rowling and his excitement about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in an interview with the Scottish Daily Record. Apparently, the two had actually met 20 years ago frequenting the same Edinburgh cafe.
We knew each other to nod at. I’d be having meetings with writers and actors and I’d see her. Eventually we’d say hello to each other and a year later – bam!.
Tiffany also shared his own experiences with the book.
I read them as an adult. I remember those photographs of rows and rows of adults sitting on the train reading Harry Potter. It was the first children’s book that I remember when people didn’t feel like they needed an excuse to read it. So she has created that world and those characters.
His experience (he also worked on the stage adaptation of Let the Right One In), admiration for the books and long friendship with J.K. Rowling makes it seem like the play is in good hands. Although Rowling is trying to keep most of the details a secret (ask her again if it’s a prequel), Tiffany did give away this small detail.
I would be very surprised if any of the original cast were to feature because the last thing they would want to do is go back to something they did ten years ago.
We’ve been working with actors since the beginning of this year, but the characters are the stars of this – so I don’t think we’ll be saying a hot Hollywood actor will be playing Harry Potter.
It does seem like Daniel Radcliffe has moved on from the role of Harry Potter to new things (like his new movie with Paul Dano), but Potter was his role for a decade. Who else are you going to recast? Are you ready for a new Harry?
