Anne Hathaway Calls Catwoman Costume A “Psychological Terrorist,” Michelle Pfeiffer Agrees

Christian Bale’s Batman costume was particularly unforgiving for the actor. He was recently quoted saying the costume almost caused him to pass out on set but he isn’t the only one from Christopher Nolan’s trilogy who had clothing issues. Anne Hathaway just referred to hers as a “psychological terrorist.” Direct quote. Unsurprisingly, she’s also not the only Catwoman actress to take issue with the outfit. Batman Returns’ Michelle Pfeiffer wasn’t very comfortable in hers either. More details, including Pfeiffer’s possible return to the role, after the jump!

I doubt there’s many people out there who would say wearing a Catwoman costume is easy but these gals really put the most descriptive (and horific) images in my mind.

“It was probably really unhealthy and it would literally just start to squeeze my skin,” Pfeiffer told E! Online about her time in the famous suit. “I was only allowed to wear it for so many hours.”

Meanwhile, Hathaway spoke with Allure Magazine about her diet and work out regimens for both The Dark Knight Rises and Les Miserables.

“[The costume] was a psychological terrorist,” Hathaway said. “The suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit…It dominated my year. I went into the gym for ten months and didn’t come out.”

Yes, I can imagine it now. You’re cast in one of the most famous roles, in one of the most famous film series, and are tasked to wear one of the most unforgiving costumes in history. I can see how that would screw with someone’s mind.

So what of Pfeiffer reclaiming the Catwoman title down the road?

“Probably, if they asked me,” the actress said of her willingness to play Selina Kyle again, but added, ”It’s unlikely that they’re going to ask me.”

She doesn’t seem to be campaigning for the role though. Of Hathaway’s version she said, ”She looks fantastic.”

Could you ever see Pfeiffer playing Catwoman again? Perhaps in a film version of The Dark Knight Returns?

That’s because they take what should be a simple and somewhat comfortable costume and make it absolutely frakking ridiculous.

I bet those heels were absolutely horrific for Ms Hathaway.

  • http://DeadAmericanDream.blogspot.com AngryBroomstick

wait, WHAT??? she wear heels in the movie? Ridiculous! how can a superhero run and fight in heels??? Why didn’t they just put her in combat boots?

I always feel bad for the actors of these types of flicks–particularly the Batman ones. The actors always seem to end up talking about how their costumes were a nightmare, and that they could barely breathe in them. I couldn’t imagine the horror. I can be terribly claustrophobic about clothing.  The thought that I’d be unable to get out of them makes my chest tighten at the mere thought.

“Could you ever see Pfeiffer playing Catwoman again?”

That’s a surprisingly hard question to answer because it’s difficult to divorce the idea of her playing Catwoman with her playing Tim Burton’s The Crow…I mean Catwoman.

Short Answer: I have no problem with her playing Catwoman, I have a lot of problems with her reprising her previous role as Catwoman.

I dream of the day where they actually design a super hero outfit for a woman that would make sense in reality. Who the hell would really prance around with their cleavage all out there to get shot/stabbed/punched without armor to protect themselves? Who would walk around and actually hurt anyone but themselves in spiked boots and a friggen corset? How bout some steel toed boots and bullet proof wear for some ladies, and for the love of god, let them eat a sandwich…

  • John Wao

Well if anyone needed real world proof that the way women are drawn in comics is unrealistic here you go. Two real live persons (three if you include Bale) who can barely function in these costumes that are designed to be faithful to their comic book inspirations.

Why does Catwoman’s costume have to be leather?  Cotton would be easier to move in and more ninja-esque.

When they originally altered the Catwoman costume into the pre-New 52 catsuit that we got so used to, zipper up, goggles down, it truly looked functional and not so crazily skin-tight (except on the covers). I’m surprised that they didn’t stick to that with the new launch considering fan praise of the design…but not so surprised since the new launch seems to be geared toward 14 year old boys.

you mean the original Jim Lee redesign? i dug his cat woman redesign more than the new JLA costumes. i get the feeling JIm Lee saves all his best ideas for batman. Remember batman wearing real army boots? that was genius.

  • Adam R. Charpentier

Better than the seams-everywhere design they’re going with now! Was it Jim Lee that gave her the matte leather catsuit rather than the glossy crappola she’s had since Batman Returns? If so, then yeah, that’s the one I was thinking of.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=704730121 Madeleine Odowichuk

Yeah, pleather (plastic leather aka what Pfeiffer’s costume was probably made of) is probably the least comfortable fabric out there. Whenever I wore pleather for a dance number back in the day, I’d wear the costume for the least amount of time possible. Spend too long in that stuff and you might be sweating and shivering at the same time. Afterwards I’d have to peel it off because I’d be drenched in sweat wherever it touched my skin. And that’s after only a few minutes of strenuous activity.
So yeah, superheroines/villains in those skintight leather/pleather catsuits aren’t dressed practically. If you’re going to cosplay them, I’d suggest wet-look lycra.

  • Kath

Or spandex/lycra, or something a bit thicker like in Fantastic Four. It’d be just as practical as cotton, and perhaps a little quieter and more suitable for different weather types.

  • Kath

Is that the one Darwyn Cooke used in his Catwoman series? It looked *awesome*

  • http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977888401 Sabreman

Because claws on her hands would be ridiculous, of course.

  • http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977888401 Sabreman

While the heels are admittedly silly (and the long hair is a clear combat failure), the rest of the costume actually looks pretty functional. Anne didn’t say (in the citations anyway) that the costume was murderously uncomfortable, only that the psychological pressure to look good in an iconic costume/role was tough.

That’s understandable, but it also sounds like, “waah, I’m being paid millions of dollars to go to the gym to make sure I look good in the suit!” Actors and actresses are paid fantastic sums of money to look good in their roles (where applicable), and are expected to work at that as much (sadly often moreso) as at acting. Insert sound of tiniest violin playing.

If she didn’t want to take on the pressure of living up to an iconic role, she could have passed on the part. This version of Catwoman is relatively sober and respectable–it’s an unspeakable privilege to be paid good money to play her in an international sure-to-be-record-breaking feature film. Not psychological terrorism.

Is this one leather?? Looks more like stretch nylon or something like that to me…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WCO5JCXARWUTWBQMXPS7NYZI7I Unicorn

Only her gloves and boots are leather. Her suit is some synthetic material like Spider-man and Superman. Not all males wear armor and steel-toed boots either.
How come people are criticizing Catwoman’s metal heels but there wasn’t much noise against Black Widow’s cleavage that miraculously stayed zipped in place?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WCO5JCXARWUTWBQMXPS7NYZI7I Unicorn

It is because punching is less powerful than kicking. It was explained that her heels are meant to break reinforced glass.

  • http://www.justplainsomething.com JustPlainSomething

Because it was a strong zipper? And it was zipped up high enough that it everything stayed in place. I thought Black Widow’s costume was far more appropriate for the character because it looked like all the SHIELD uniforms.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. No one would actually wear this and still be able to act as Catwoman. She may look fantastic, but she also looks like she can’t breathe.

  • Julianne McCartney

That bothered me too. You’re gonna get shot in the chest BW, zip that shit up. Don’t worry we still know you’re a woman when it’s covered.

  • Julianne McCartney

I know not all dudes are armored out, but there are a lot more dudes with costumes that make sense than there are women who’s costumes make sense. I really cannot name one female super hero where I look at them and think “yeah that’s totally comfy and easy to fight crime in”. Not. One.

  • Terence Ng

Unicorn: Yeah, but would a steel reinforced high heel spike be better at breaking glass than a steel-reinforced combat boot?

  • http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977888401 Sabreman

Unicorn: a short-heeled spike would serve the same purpose, and wouldn’t necessarily affect her ability to run and do acrobatics.

I understand the point is to hit with the heel, not the toe, but a short retractable claw, within the sole of the heel of the boot, would serve the same purpose. Granted, she might have to kick twice, once to puncture (with the force of the kick driving the spike out of the sole) and the second to shatter. But she’d have major maneuverability gains, and would still be able to use the spike for offensive combat kicking.

She just wouldn’t look so tip-toe-sexy all the time. (Only some of the time–when she chooses to walk on tiptoe for actual practical purposes for example!)

  • http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977888401 Sabreman

Also, it occurs to me that when the design team said that Catwoman needed to have more dangerous kicks, so that she could be able to break reinforced glass, someone should have raised their hand and asked, “uh… do you even know what Catwoman does in the comics? She’s a stealth operator, who cuts quickly through glass if she needs to! Even if we’re revamping her to be Talia al’Ghul, and a ninja operative of the League of Shadows, why the hell should we be making her a glass-kicking brawler??”

Or, maybe someone did raise their hand, and the answer was, “High heels make her look sexy so your argument is invalid.”

  • http://twitter.com/embiguous Emily O.

I’m surprised they didn’t give her the Jim Lee Hush look w/the googles and everything. Anne Hathaway’s costume kinda bores me.

  • http://twitter.com/bamboo_princess bamboo_princess

She can want to play the roll of a lifetime and still be appalled at the design. The two arent mutually exclusive. I know a prize roll and being allowed to be human sound unthinkable but it’s not such an unrealistic desire.

  • http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977888401 Sabreman

It sounds less like she’s appalled at the design, than she’s super-nervous about living up to the standard of looking good in the roll. It doesn’t appear to be an inhuman and unrealistic design like MichelleP being sewn into her costume and being made sick by it.

If I had to take a roll that required wearing Taylor Kitsch’s “John Carter” warrior costume, I’d feel pretty dang nervous about looking good in it, too!–and I’d certainly see 10 months of gym time in my future. But I’d only be kind of joking to call it psychological terrorism.

Looking-good-as-Catwoman involves even higher expectations, though. The realization that I would be critically slaughtered worldwide if I didn’t look good enough in the costume which, traditionally, cannot functionally include molded armor to hide behind ({coughbatmanhack}), would naturally result in immense psychological pressure.

But that’s part of the job description! Calling it psychological terrorism is understandable in a way, but can only be a bad joke at best. Especially when so many women (and men for that matter) suffer from real damned psychological terrorism.

  • Gregory Allen

Oh please, I’m a man who runs around fighting crime in a zentai, and I don’t have any troubles.

  • Adam R. Charpentier

I’m holding off judgement until we see her array of gadgets. I’m hoping they inspire a more Catwoman-like feel.

  • Adam R. Charpentier

Agreed! And she seems to be keeping her zipper up, unlike video game Catwoman.

  • Life Lessons

Hell yes. Let’ see Catwoman age and age magnificently!

Under Armour. Make everything out of Under Armour. That’s what Marvel seems to do for a lot of the costumes in their movies. Notable exceptions: Thor (wearing real armor), Iron Man (wearing battle suit), Hulk (just pants), Black Widow (leather), most of the x-men (also leather). But the Fantastic Four, other Avengers/Shield, Spider-Man, and others wear advanced synthetic textiles. But it’s probably not actually Under Armour because Under Armour melts to your skin if heated enough.

As someone who trained with law enforcement and other agencies, and happens to be very slender with a pretty face, I am fucking sick and tired of people telling me to eat a sandwich. I eat so much during the day they call me the piggy. I have an incredibly fast metabolism to the point where I get SICK if I don’t eat every few hours.

Maybe my memory’s wonky, but I don’t remember comic book batman’s costume being made of heavy, incredibly restrictive materials. The only time his mask does anything like that is in Batman Beyond and that’s just because of all the circuitry that went on in there. Old school batman fought crime like a boss. His costume didn’t protect anything but his identity and make him look a little intimidating, though that was mostly in the way he carried himself, imo. Catwoman’s outfit too. The comic book outfits didn’t look so restrictive, minus the heels. And maybe it’s a psychological thing for the heroines in the comics themselves. Kicking ass isn’t too lady like. Maybe the comic book women just want to make their femininity known as they take down their would be criminals/villains.
