The 7 Geekiest Moments Of The Academy Awards

Allow Us To Explain

Allow Us To Explain

Look, we’re geeks. We can’t help but see geeky references in everything. So while people like Hugh Jackman may star in many different iconic roles, we’ll always call him Wolverine. So you can imagine where our imaginations take us when we watch a show like the Academy Awards.

Runners up for this list include Harry Potter missing the opportunity to stake Bella with his wand, James T. Kirk and Uhura standing next to each other, and the Joker introducing the First Lady of the United States. Those were all somewhat geeky moments but nothing to write home about. These 7, on the other hand…

    “Trekker”?

  • http://www.facebook.com/KozmikPariah Ryan Colson

Imma show my age rage a little bit and say Trekkers are real Trek fans and “Trekkies” is kinda derogatory, only somehow between Big Bang Theory’s stupidity and the blatant assholery of the mainstream has turned “Trekkie” into acceptable and most Trek fans are happy being recognized even if they are being called “retard” in another language, basically. :)

Idk, I’ve always thought “Trekkie” was the proper term, this coming from decades as a Star Trek fan who has actually never seen Big Bang Theory. And I’ve never seen it used as a derogatory term.

Thanks Jill! I guess I’m out of touch with the convention crowd, I’ve only been to one and that was when I was like 12 yrs old, the others are too far away to attend :( But I think the internal strife between Trekkies and Trekkers is kind of dumb, especially since Star Trek is all about getting along with people of different beliefs/race/species/etc. Can’t we all just enjoy Star Trek in peace and harmony? :)

The eagle-eyed DWO has noticed that Doctor Who classic series makeup designer Lisa Westcott won the Oscar in the Makeup and Hairstyling for “Les Miserables”.

Big Bang Theory is a stain.

That awkward moment with The Avengers proves that Whedon should write all of their dialogue. Even when they are at home.

  • http://www.facebook.com/KozmikPariah Ryan Colson

IDK, I know about 15 years ago when I was in HS, the Trek fans were very violently angry about being called “Trekkies” and I got prompt corrections all the time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/KozmikPariah Ryan Colson

    Seriously :-/

  • Cris

I will never forget the Argo white washing BS. Screw the Academy and Hollywood.

  • Mars

    What about the trekkens?!

  • http://wrongsirwrong.blogspot.com/ Magic Xylophone

Wait a minute… a Hollywood studio not using Jack Kirby’s art, but giving him credit? What is this, opposite day?

I fell even harder after the JGL soft shoe and I didn’t think I had any farther to fall…

Let’s not forget how they cut the mic of the winner of the VFX award when he started talking about Rythm & Hues and the studios looming bankruptcy and closure. It would’ve been akward since the coverage of the Oscars did such a good job at avoiding showing any of the VFX worker protests. F**k you Oscars.

What about the geek moment of the Von Trapp Family?

  • Brian

Poor Avengers. You can’t have more than 2 people present an award, it just gets awkward. And they needed Hemsworth there to land the joke about Downey being short, since he’s about as tall as Renner and Ruffalo.

  • obiwen

    That dancing. THAT DANCING.

Samuel L Jackson always leaves me wondering things like–was that scripted, or did he just bully the actors into shutting up on stage? Because if SLJ started yelling at me to shut up and get on with it…I would.

I thought it was kind of hilarious that behind the Avengers cast, they showed sketches of all the characters–Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Nick Fury, and…Thor.

Aww, poor Hawkeye. Your life sucks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laura.truxillo Laura Truxillo

“Trekkie” has been considered an acceptable term for LOOOOONG before the rise of Big Bang Theory.

I mean, there were the movies, for one thing. Which maybe seem over the top to normal people but looked at pretty even Geek Levels for most of it (the sad large man dressed as Troi reciting-and-forgetting his Klingon war poetry was a low point, though).

Trekkie’s always been plenty acceptable around my household growing up. I was AWARE of the theoretical class distinction, but it seems sort of like the Trek vs Wars debate–only people who feel like being angry about something care.

  • http://www.facebook.com/laura.truxillo Laura Truxillo

Yeah, but he was in very noticeable heels, which makes the short thing even more precious. But Renner is so adorably wee.

  • Constance

Gene Roddenberry shot down the word “Trekker”, so I’m gonna stick with Trekkie.

  • Constance

I don’t understand why Bella was invited. She couldn’t read from a cue card. It was awkward. :/

Nah, just let RDJ stand there looking cool, Samuel J look like a badass, and the rest can just be silly. I wouldn’t complain about Joss dialog tho…

    Culture-appropriating harlot. Mmyep.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=597171283 Lisa Still Smouldering

omg yes! And watching Daniel Radcliff working to keep up like a champ was awesome too since he was obviously not as trained as the other two. :D

  • Adam R. Charpentier

I am in love with that three word phrase. Thank you!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=597171283 Lisa Still Smouldering

np! Glad to oblige :) Also, BBT hater? *brofist*

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=597171283 Lisa Still Smouldering

Oh, and something I have been saving for a while for a moment just like this!

Don’t worry, it’s readable and not the usual Reddit sewage. :)

  • Adam R. Charpentier

Hah! I appreciate any excuse to continue watching South Park, and they articulate almost everything wrong with BBT with one example, so props. To be honest, I hadn’t thought that deeply about it. My disdain for the show is mostly derived from the characters being horrible and selfish to one another whenever I’ve seen even the briefest scene.
