‘Will you marry me?’: Man pulls out a surprising ring while diving with sharks. Then his girlfriend is ‘completely in shock’

A marriage proposal is already a nerve-racking moment. Doing it underwater while surrounded by sharks takes things to a whole new level. However, one man decided that was exactly how he wanted to surprise his girlfriend, even if it meant taking a few unusual precautions with the engagement ring.
Planning a surprise proposal can be difficult, especially when one unexpected moment can ruin the surprise. This man had an additional concern. He needed to keep the ring hidden throughout the dive without accidentally losing it to one of the sharks swimming nearby.
According to People, James Walsh proposed to his girlfriend, Paige Cook, during a shark-diving experience at Skegness Aquarium in Lincolnshire, England, on Sept. 10. The experience was originally a Christmas gift for Cook, who had no idea her boyfriend had secretly arranged something much bigger.
Then came the big question
Walsh wanted to propose somewhere unusual and memorable. Since sharks are Cook’s favorite animals, he decided the aquarium would be the perfect location. He contacted the staff ahead of their visit and asked for help organizing the surprise.
The aquarium provided a special proposal sign and arranged to separate the couple from the rest of their diving group. Walsh also had to figure out how to conceal the engagement ring until the right moment. He attached it to a chain wrapped around his wrist and hid it beneath his wetsuit.
However, keeping the ring hidden was not his only concern. Walsh joked that he was worried one of the sharks might eat it. Fortunately, his hiding place worked, and Cook remained completely unaware of what was about to happen.
Once underwater, the couple knelt together on the sandy floor of the shark tank. Walsh revealed a sign reading, “Will You Marry Me?” Cook immediately covered her scuba mask with her hand in surprise. Since she couldn’t answer verbally underwater, she gave him an “OK” hand signal to accept his proposal before the couple embraced.
Cook later recalled being “completely in shock” when she realized what was happening. Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, she admitted that her immediate concern was whether her excitement would interfere with her breathing.
“My first thought was, ‘Am I going to run out of air from hyperventilating?'” she recalled. The experience was particularly special for Cook because she had always wanted to go scuba diving and swim with sharks. However, the unexpected proposal briefly made her forget about the animals surrounding her.
“This [was] the best day of my life. I’ve always wanted to go scuba diving and swimming with sharks. Then [the proposal] happened, and I completely forgot I was in a tank!” she recalled.
Walsh had put considerable thought into where to propose. He wanted to choose somewhere Cook would love, surrounded by her favorite animals.
“Sharks are her favorite animal. I knew that’s where I wanted to do it,” he explained during his radio interview. “I thought, surrounded by her favorite animal, it would be a unique experience.”
Skegness Aquarium also celebrated the couple’s engagement by sharing a photograph of their underwater proposal on Facebook. Staff member Jamie Elvidge explained that swimming with sharks was already an exciting experience, but the surprise engagement made the occasion even more memorable for everyone involved.
“It’s an adrenaline-fueled experience anyway, and then when you add the extra excitement of this, you feel like you’re there and part of it,” Elvidge told the BBC.
For Walsh, the elaborate planning paid off. He managed to surprise Cook, keep the ring safely hidden, and get the answer he had been hoping for—all while surrounded by sharks.
