‘We need this kind of push back’: People show support for Chicago mayor as he speaks against the use of ‘illegal alien’ term

Chicago has been one of those cities that has been in constant conflict with Donald Trump since he began his second term this year. For the last few months, the city’s leaders, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, have stood firm against Trump’s repeated attempts to send in the National Guard to gain more control over the city.

Mayor Brandon Johnson is making it clear once again that President Donald Trump will not be able to dictate how the city works. In a clip that is currently going viral on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Johnson confronts an interviewer who referred to undocumented immigrants as “illegal aliens,” a derogatory term often used by the President and his Republican allies to demean them.

Johnson, a Black man, called the term “racist” and “nasty” and refused to accept anyone using that term to describe “human beings.” He highlighted the socio-structural implications of using such a term, stating that if people were to follow the “legal term” route, he would have to refer to his own people as “slaves”, which is, of course, unacceptable.

People who watched Brandon Johnson take a stand against the interviewer and, on a broader scale, against Trump and his MAGA supporters praised him for his boldness. Many noted how such assertiveness was necessary as Trump tries to exert more pressure on people, especially those residing in Blue States. One person stated:

“We need this kind of pushback and to call out their disgusting and derogatory terms every single time.”

Several others echoed similar sentiments. That being said, there were more than a few who targeted Brandon Johnson. While many pointed out that the interviewer was using the correct term to address the undocumented immigrant population, others criticised Johnson and called for his removal from his current position. A quick look at their profiles makes it clear who they support and what they stand for.
