Netflix Dropped a New German Spy Series. Now Everyone Is Obsessed
There are plenty of formulaic spy dramas out there that will hit the spot, but still be easily forgotten a few days after viewing. New Netflix series Unfamiliar, however, is sure to linger in your thoughts for weeks to come.
The streaming giant has a history of producing critically acclaimed German shows like the mindblowing Dark, and it seems with this latest offering they have another twisty sleeper hit on their hands. But what is Unfamiliar on Netflix?
What is Unfamiliar on Netflix?
Unfamiliar follows Simon and Meret Schäfer (Felix Kramer and Susanne Wolff), a married couple who run a Berlin safe house and appear to live a perfectly simple life. However, things take a turn for the interesting when their one-time roles as undercover agents are revealed. As their carefully constructed lives are pulled apart by the past, they soon find out that there are more lies and secrets in their history than they could have ever imagined, some of which could be deadly.
What happens in Unfamiliar?
The series begins with Meret and Simon celebrating their daughter Nina’s (Maja Bons) 16th birthday. However, the everyday domestic scene is interrupted when they receive a phonecall from someone who says he’s been hurt and needs their help. While a little odd, this isn’t a completely absurd scenario for the pair, as they run a safehouse in Berlin. Plus, they were both once German foreign intelligence (BND) agents, so they’re quite handy in an emergency.
However, when the couple make contact with the man, they realize that everything might be more suspicious than they first thought: he’s behaving very strangely, his injuries appear to be self-inflicted, and there’s no way to identify who he is.
Back at the house the unknown man begins talking, and while he doesn’t reveal who he is, he does make reference to a failed mission the couple took part in 16 years prior, in Belarus. The Schäfers quickly realise that former Russian military intelligence (GRU) officer Josef Koleev is involved, and from there their once-perfect lives begin to unravel.
