Trump’s dreams about running Venezuela might get quashed soon, but people think it will be too late by then

United States President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters are more enthusiastic than ever following Trump’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in an operation that took place early Saturday. However, the majority of the public does not share this excitement. They generally believe that Trump is trying to involve himself and, by extension, the United States, in the governance of another country through force, which could place the U.S. in a precarious position, potentially leading to Venezuela and other nations waging war against the United States.
Members of the U.S. government who oppose Trump’s exercise of unchallenged power, especially regarding his involvement in foreign affairs or making drastic decisions about them, are working to take the necessary steps to prevent this from happening. However, some believe it may be too late for any action to be effective. Nevertheless, given the current circumstances, every effort is important, as these initiatives could one day evolve into actions. With that said, here’s the latest news: on January 3, 2025, MSN reported that the Senate will vote to block Trump’s actions against Venezuela. The article noted that this vote is scheduled for next week, raising concerns among many who are witnessing Trump’s aggressive actions against Venezuela unfold in real time. This resolution is backed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York), Senator Tim Kaine (Virginia), Senator Rand Paul (Kentucky), and Senator Adam Schiff (California). It holds a privileged status, meaning Senate Majority Leader John Thune cannot prevent it from being brought to the floor, even if he wished to, and it would only require a simple majority to pass in the Senate.
In relation to Trump’s misuse of power concerning Venezuela, Tim Kaine, who is also one of the sponsors of the resolution that calls for limiting Trump’s powers regarding the country, expressed his worries about the attempts in a statement to The Hill on Saturday. He referred to Trump’s actions as an “unauthorised military attack” on Venezuela aimed at capturing Maduro, calling this a “sickening return” to a period when the United States claimed the right to control the internal political matters of other nations and stated:
“It is long past time for Congress to reassert its critical constitutional role in matters of war, peace, diplomacy and trade. My bipartisan resolution stipulating that we should not be at war with Venezuela absent a clear congressional authorisation will come up for a vote next week.”
He added:
“We’ve entered the 250th year of American democracy and cannot allow it to devolve into the tyranny that our founders fought to escape.”
