‘They was finna hit him on purpose’: Man catches truck about to run over dog. Then the driver spots him watching

Did this driver go out of their way to hit an innocent dog? You be the judge.
Most people’s instinct when they see an animal on the road—be it a household pet like a cat or dog, or a wild animal like a duck or deer—is to slow down, swerve if it’s safe, or stop entirely.
For some people, the reaction is rooted in empathy. For others, it’s fear, and some just don’t want the impact to damage their vehicle.
But in a now-viral video, there’s speculation that a driver did the exact opposite—is it true?
Did the driver try to hit the little dog?
In a viral video with more than 1.2 million views, Colton Jimenez (@coltonjimenez) shared the wild thing he just witnessed.
In the video, Jimenez is sitting inside a car (or maybe it’s a construction vehicle) at a job site. He is admiring a dog that looks like “he’s taking himself on a walk.”
At first, the video is just him interacting with the dog. He tries to get it to go over to him by telling it to “come here” and whistling at it.
Jimenez gets out of the car and starts to approach the little dog when a Toyota pickup truck comes speeding down the street.
The truck is going way too fast for a residential area, and it suddenly stops in front of the dog.
“Swear they was finna hit that dog on purpose until they saw me,” Jimenez said in the text overlay.
“The [expletive] wrong with you, bruh?” Jimenez says to the driver, whose windows are tinted dark so you can’t see who’s in there. “I got that on video, you crazy [expletive].”
Jimenez goes back to interacting with the dog, telling it that he would have fought on its behalf if the person had hit it. He then proceeds to keep asking for permission to pet—but the dog isn’t having it and moves away.
Is it illegal to hit an animal with your car?
Just like how you have a responsibility to stay at the scene of an accident if you hit a vehicle, and especially if you injure another person, it’s against the law to leave the scene of an accident where an animal was injured, according to a law site.
In some states, you must report the accident to the animal’s owner. You can also report to the police, and not doing so could result in a traffic violation.
At least in New York state, this only applies to a cat, dog, horse, or an animal that is considered cattle.
You can only be convicted if you know you hit the animal. So in a case where it’s dark and you hit, say, a cat, without knowing, then it’s a valid defense.
In New York, this offense carries a fine of up to $100 or $50 to $150 for a service animal. Subsequent offenses are $50 to $150.
However, another law firm states that accidents caused by domestic animals are “typically the responsibility of the animal’s owner because the owner is expected to keep it under control and out of the roadway.”
Viewers think the driver’s guilty
“He was aimed right at that dog,” a top comment with more than 25,000 views read.
“They do that with cats all the time with my town it’s sucks that people actually do this,” a person shared.
“People excusing this [expletive] by admitting they’re on their phones while driving. Go to jail bro, just go. You cause an accident bcuz of a damn phone, i’m taking evrything you got to ur name,” another added.
While many commenters agree that the person was gunning for the pup, it’s possible that they were just surprised to see the dog in the road and that’s why they stopped so suddenly.
