Tom Holland Tried to Play It Cool With Erling Haaland at the Monaco Grand Prix, but the Soccer Star Left Him on Read

Radio silence.

Tom Holland just got a masterclass in humility from soccer superstar Erling Haaland, and the internet can’t get enough of it. The Spider-Man actor tried to shoot his shot with the Norwegian goal machine at the Monaco Grand Prix last month, only to be left on read in the most brutal way possible. According to TMZ, Holland spilled the details on an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, calling the whole thing a “humbling experience” that every actor needs.

It all went down when Holland spotted Haaland across from him in a hospitality suite while watching Lewis Hamilton race. Thinking he’d play it cool and shoot his shot, Holland sent Haaland a text. But all he got in response was nothing. No reply, no excuse, not even an “I’m busy tonight. I’m playing football.” Just radio silence.

Holland even admitted he never expected to be talking about this on live TV. But there he was, dissecting his failed bromance attempt with Fallon like it’s the plot of a rom-com gone wrong.

What makes the incident funnier is Holland’s reaction

Instead of getting salty, he leaned into the awkwardness, calling it a necessary reality check for actors who might get a little too used to the spotlight. The crowd ate it up. There’s something refreshing about a celebrity owning their cringe moments instead of pretending they’re above them.

Erling Haaland isn’t just any soccer player. He’s a full-blown phenomenon. According to LADBible, the 25-year-old striker has been tearing up the World Cup, racking up 16 goals in eight matches and turning his name into a household term.

Off the field, he’s just as entertaining, documenting his wild adventures on social media. Remember that time he bought a taxidermied raccoon in Texas? Yeah, that happened. Haaland’s mix of absurd humor and elite athleticism has earned him a massive global following, so it’s no surprise Holland wanted in on the action.

But here’s the kicker: Haaland might not have even known who Holland was

Earlier reports suggest the soccer star doesn’t have much time for movies, which is fair, since he’s been a little busy at the World Cup. Still, it’s hard not to laugh at the idea of Holland, one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, getting ghosted by someone who’s too focused on dominating the pitch to care about Spider-Man.

Holland took it in stride, though. “He’s incredible,” he said. “I mean, he’s an absolute legend.”

Haaland’s World Cup run has been nothing short of legendary. Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, he’s become a meme machine, whether he’s posing with a stuffed raccoon or cracking jokes about his towering height. His social media game is top-tier, and his personality has made him a fan favorite far beyond soccer circles. It’s easy to see why Holland, who’s no stranger to viral moments himself, wanted to connect.

But Haaland’s got bigger things on his plate – like supporting England in the World Cup, apparently. Yes, you read that right. Despite playing for Norway, Haaland admitted he’s been rooting for England since he was a kid. “I think I got an England jersey before I got a Norway jersey when I was young,” he told ESPN. “So of course I want England to do well because it’s a nice country and it’s a nice t-shirt.”

So, is there any hope for a Holland-Haaland hangout in the future?

Holland seems open to it, but after England’s win over Norway, Haaland might just be too busy to notice. Either way, this whole saga is a reminder that even A-list celebrities can’t charm their way into every friendship. Sometimes, you just get left on read, and the only thing left to do is laugh about it on late-night TV.

Holland’s Monaco snub is the kind of story that’s too good to make up. It’s got everything: a celebrity reaching out, a superstar ignoring him, and a late-night host milking the awkwardness for all it’s worth. It’s way more entertaining than any scripted bromance.

Haaland’s focus is on the game, and Holland’s got movies to make. If these two ever do cross paths again, it would be fun to see how it plays out. Until then, we’ll just have to settle for the viral clip of Holland admitting he got played – and loving every second of it.
