Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ Dropped a Trailer That Feels Like Les Grossman is Back in Action

Tom Cruise is a talent that can transcend genres when given the chance. We saw it with 2008’s Tropic Thunder, when he completely transformed to play Les Grossman. And while we love him when he’s jumping off of buildings or swan-diving out of planes with no parachute, Cruise possesses something truly special when he allows himself to, for lack of a better phrase, go completely off the rails.
Digger was teased originally at CinemaCon back in April. The trainer officially released today contained much of the sneak peek we were able to see back then during the Warner Bros. presentation. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Digger looks to be blending the absurdity with an earnest seriousness that Iñárritu is particularly skilled at doing.
“Digger here got us into this mess, and Digger’s gonna get dig us out again!”
There is a lot to unpack with the trailer, to which I say: Good. Lately, trailers have been feeling a little “go girl, give us nothing,” and while I enjoy going into films blind whenever possible, sometimes I want just a tiny, itty bit of context. And with a cast that includes Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, and John Goodman, Digger promises to be one of the hits of the fall when it releases in theaters.
The trailer opens deeply contemplating mortality. Digger’s cat appears to be terminally ill, and he is trying to see how long she has. It cuts to a report from a team on a glacier in Greenland who is dealing with a five-foot crack. When the scientist asks to have the program shut down to avoid a catastrophe, Digger doesn’t take it well.
As it turns out, though, keeping the program going has the world teetering on the edge of a horrific disaster. And it is something that Digger has been aware of the entire time. Because of this, it all falls to him to save the world and figure out how to stop it. The sweeping shots we get in this trailer promise us Iñárritu’s unique style, and the open frames give Cruise plenty of room to explore.
Hubris, mortality, the inescapable will of Mother Nature, and Cruise being able to let loose and remind people that he’s just as funny and talented as he is fearless. Who wouldn’t want to see this film? And to sweeten the deal, Digger was shot entirely in VistaVision and will be released in theaters and IMAX.
Digger hits theaters on October 2, 2026.
