‘They’ll probably like it’: Donald Trump says he can bypass Congress to strike whoever he wants

Donald Trump speaks during a press conference

On Thursday, President Donald Trump continued his comments on handling alleged drug trafficking through airborne strikes. This past week, two strikes were conducted against vessels in the eastern Pacific. Everybody on board both vessels were killed.

“I’m not going to necessarily ask for a declaration of war,” Trump said. “I think we’re just doing to kill people that are bringing drugs into our country. Okay? We’re going to kill them, you know, they’re going to be like, dead.”

That’s deeply concerning to hear from a world leader, right? I’m not just imagining that at one point in history we had a semi-functioning democracy?

Since the start of September, these strikes mark the eighth or ninth attacks. Trump has also recently suggested moving on to land strikes as well, targeting alleged cartel members. That would require him to notify Congress first, but he doesn’t anticipate any pushback.

“We’re going to tell them what we’re going to do and I think they’ll probably like it, except for the radical left lunatics,” he said.

So, not only is he absolutely certain Congress won’t care, but he also plans on Congress agreeing with whatever he says. That is, to put it simply, a horrifying idea. There is no evidence that the boats attacked were smuggling anything, despite what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insisted on. To move forward with land strikes in countries like Venezuela is reckless, but we don’t expect anything less at this point.

Trump’s comments come after an American B-1 Lancer bomber flew near the coast of Venezuela on Thursday. He denied that the B-1 bomber was US-sent.
