There is still hope for that A24 ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake

At San Diego Comic-Con, you get to interact with some of your favorite creatives and while doing interviews for The Long Walk, I was lucky enough to speak to screenwriter JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee. And when I have the two available, I’m asking about one rumored project…

Back in March, rumors began swirling that Glen Powell was working with the Strange Darling director on a remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Then, a few months later, the news was grew to a whole slate of creatives who wanted to take a jab at the iconic film franchise. Powell and Mollner were still on the list, just with A24 attached.

So when I had the chance to speak with Mollner about it, I asked specifically about hearing that people wanted him to take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and how he felt knowing that people were interested in his take on it. “It feels very good regardless of whether any of those rumors are true, it’s really nice because wow, people would like to see my version of that,” Mollner said.

“My company used to be called No Remake Pictures. I’s now called Electric Lady just in case, to keep my mind open. But I don’t like the idea of remaking movies that I think are perfect. And I will say that I do think Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect horror film. But yeah, you know, Glen (Powell) is a tremendous actor and one of the first like real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it,” he said but went on to address the rumors more directly. “And I was excited about his work. And so I do know him and I met him and it was a really cool meeting and I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.”

Mollner’s producing partner on a lot of his work and a producer on The Long Walk, Roy Lee, interjected at this point to say “Well, there is some validity to it and we’re still in discussions, but nothing that’s concrete just yet.”

So if you are waiting for an answer, at least we know that there are still talks happening about a potential Powell/Mollner Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I cannot wait!
