The mastermind of Donald Trump’s crackdown in Minneapolis is finally in hot water, and groveling probably won’t save him

The commander-at-large of the United States Border Patrol, Gregory Bovino, who contributed significantly to the Trump administration’s immigration policy, including its crackdown measures, is allegedly being removed from his role as per an article published by The Independent on Jan 27, 2026. His rumoured removal from his post comes just a few days after the brutal shooting and killing of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, at the hands of ICE agents in Minneapolis and a few weeks after the murder of Renee Good under similar circumstances in the same city.
After facing repeated scrutiny from people in the United States and from his own party, it appears that Trump is finally taking a step he should have taken a long time ago. He is removing Gregory Bovino from Minneapolis, which is good, but there is a catch. He is replacing him with White House border czar and Trump sympathiser Tom Homan, who, by the way, had a federal bribery investigation on his head after he was reportedly recorded by undercover FBI agents in September 2024 accepting a paper bag containing $50,000 cash. That case was eventually dropped during Trump’s second term as the president of the United States, thanks to the good samaritans in the Department of Justice who basically served the orange overlord’s interests by the time.
Having said that, as more and more media outlets speak about Gregory Bovino’s transfer and possible demotion, some individuals within the Department of Homeland Security are refuting the claims. On January 27, 2026, Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
Chief Gregory Bovino has NOT been relieved of his duties. As @PressSecstated (White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt) from the White House podium, @CMDROpAtLargeCA (Commander Op At Large CA Gregory K. Bovino) is a key part of the President’s team and a great American.”
In other related news, Karoline Leavitt, during a recent press briefing, stated that Trump is willing to remove ICE and border control officials from Minnesota on three conditions. Firstly, Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and all Democrat leaders must “turn over all criminal illegal aliens currently incarcerated in their prisons and jails” to federal authorities, along with any “illegal aliens” with “active warrants” or “known criminal history” for immediate deportation. Secondly, State and local police must agree to turn over “all illegal aliens” arrested by local police. Lastly, the local police “must assist” federal law enforcement in apprehending illegals wanted for crimes, particularly the violent ones.
