Tampa Bay woman finds a Walmart job that pays $30 an hour with no degree and free training. Then she explained the job: ‘so fun’

Best deal ever.

Tampa Bay’s Erin landed a Walmart job that pays $30 an hour, no degree required, and she’s calling it “so fun.” In a viral TikTok video, the 28-year-old @lettersfromerin97 broke down how she earns $30.05 an hour as an Optician Apprentice at a Walmart Vision Center. That’s roughly $60,000 a year working about 36 hours per week, and she didn’t need a college diploma to get there.

Erin started at around $26 an hour with zero experience or certification. Walmart didn’t just skip the degree requirement. They actually paid for her ABO and NCLE optician licensing exams, fast-tracking her to a higher wage. In her 232-second video, she painted the job as a mix of customer service, sales, and hands-on healthcare.

Daily tasks include fitting frames, interpreting prescriptions, performing basic pre-testing like auto-refraction and eye pressure checks, handling repairs, managing inventory, and selling sunglasses. She even called out the infamous “puff of air” test that everyone loves to hate. “I’m your girl,” she joked.

The role isn’t just about the paycheck

Erin described the work as engaging and dynamic, blending medical knowledge with sales skills. “It’s not a job for the weak,” she said, explaining how you have to balance what customers need with what they can afford. But the perks make it worth it. Walmart covered the cost of her certifications and even paid her to study for them. After passing her tests, she got a 10% raise, bumping her to $29 an hour. A yearly raise later, and she’s now at $30.05.

Her video struck a chord with viewers, racking up over 1.5 million views, 207,900 likes, 7,446 comments, and 25,600 reposts in a short time. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenters praising the no-degree entry point and the fact that Walmart covers training costs. “This is the kind of realistic advice we need,” one commenter wrote.

Another said, “Walmart really paying for training? Applying today!” A few were skeptical at first, laughing at the idea of high Walmart pay, but Erin’s detailed breakdown won them over. Erin’s content style is a big part of why her video resonated so much. She’s refreshingly candid, upbeat, and conversational, speaking directly to the camera with natural energy.

She doesn’t shy away from swearing for emphasis, like when she told viewers, “So that’s what I would f—ing do if I was you.” Her account blends practical career advice with personal transparency, making complex job information feel accessible. Beyond job tips, she shares glasses try-ons, beauty tips, book reviews, and light storytimes.

She laid out the steps on how anyone can land a similar role

The job titles to search for include “Vision Center Associate,” “Vision Center Team,” or “Optician Level 1.” Walmart covers the cost of the ABO and NCLE certifications, which are required to advance. In Florida, where Erin works, you’ll also need to get licensed after passing those tests.

But even if you skip the certifications, you can still work as a team associate. Erin did make it clear that getting certified is the way to go. “It’s free and it’s easy, and you make bank just getting your one certification,” she said.

The timing of Erin’s video couldn’t be better. With living costs rising and student debt weighing on many young adults, her story offers a realistic alternative to the traditional four-year degree path. It’s proof that stable, well-paying jobs with benefits and paid training exist outside the usual college-to-career pipeline. Her follow-up videos continue to gain traction as job seekers look for opportunities in retail healthcare roles.

Erin’s background adds another layer to her story

She describes herself as a “Tampa transplant” with Appalachian roots and a “Free Palestine” supporter. Her videos don’t just focus on the job; they give viewers a glimpse into her life, making her success feel even more relatable. Whether she’s trying on glasses, sharing beauty tips, or reviewing books, she keeps the tone light and engaging.

For anyone considering a career change or just starting out, Erin’s experience is a reminder that opportunities are out there if you know where to look. Walmart’s Vision Center roles might not be the first to come to mind when you think of high-paying jobs, but Erin’s story proves they’re worth a closer look.
