Video game sales data is in for the month of July, and we all know what to expect: complete and utter StarCraft II dominance.
Unsurprisingly, that’s what we got.Ā Blizzard sold more than 700,000 retail copies of the game in the last five days of July, causing an 103% increase in US PC game sales from June. Overall, Blizzard says it sold 1.5 million copies in the game’s first 48 hours.
These stats make it the fastest selling strategy game in history, not the best selling.Ā Its daddy StarCraft, the 4th best selling PC game in history, has had more than a decade to sell 11 million copies.Ā It is also eclipsed by the sales of sister expansion pack World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, which, with 2.4 million US copies sold in 24 hours, holds the title of fastest selling PC game in any genre.
Will StarCraft II eventually make it to the top of the PC game all time best seller list, with such greats as Half-Life, Myst, Doom and The Sims?Ā We’ll have to wait and see.Ā Either way, Blizzard is probably pretty happy.
