“I Mean, How Cool Is That?”: Mr. Movie Himself Jumped Behind the Camera of the Latest ‘Star Wars’ Film

There are an increasing number of reasons to be excited for Star Wars: Starfighter. Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy helming the film. An all-star cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. And now, another aspect of the film has come to light that nobody could’ve even imagined… Tom Cruise.
In a recent profile in The New York Times, Levy revealed that Cruise stopped by to visit the set of Starfighter, just as production was getting ready to film a lightsaber battle in a swampy setting. Cruise ended up operating a camera during the sequence, a task that he apparently took to very enthusiastically.
“Last week Steven Spielberg was here,” Levy remarked in the piece. “And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.” He went on to add that: “Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?”
The idea of Cruise being committed to a filmmaking bit is absolutely nothing new. It feels like every Mission: Impossible installment is accompanied by a behind-the-scenes story of him fostering some massive stunt, so it can look as great as possible in the camera. I mean, the man has spent years trying to get a movie filmed in actual space.
So it shouldn’t be too surprising that Cruise jumped into the fray of Star Wars: Starfighter… but if anything, it makes the movie even more exciting. There’s already a lot of newness that Starfighter is bringing to the franchise’s realm, especially after so many years of it being off of the big screen. So the notion that the biggest action star of our century is involved, even very briefly from behind the camera, is cool. Honestly, the fact that this conversation is helping highlight the artistry of camera operation is a joy in and of itself. Is it the summer of 2027 yet?
